Silver Standard Resources (NASDAQ:SSRI) Leads Silver Stocks

Silver stocks led the way today, and Silver Standard Resources (NASDAQ:SSRI) led the silver stocks, as it gained $0.76 a share to end the session at $18.11, a 4.38 percent increase.

Silver Standard moved up on news it has increased production at its Pirquitas Mine in Argentina, which will produce an estimated 7 million ounces of silver in 2010.

Commodities did better today as risk tolerance increased on hopes the European Union may have enough capital to handle the sovereign debt crisis, although I wouldn't place my hat on that being a reality.

Silver prices remained about level, gaining $0.01, to finish at $18.30.

Silver Still Moving with Gold

Silver Futures Move in Sync with Gold

Although silver has a strong industrial base and demand in its own regard, investors at this time are considering it a haven of safety similar to gold, and consequently what is happening with gold is what is happening with silver, as far as price movements go.

Again, what that tells us is silver isn't being acquired for its industrial demand and use, but rather for its resistance to tough economic conditions and uncertainty in a similar way gold is.

Until that changes, we'll probably see the two move together as they have so many times in the past.

Silver Wheaton (NYSE:SLW) Growing Long Term

Silver Wheaton Growth

No matter which way you look at Silver Wheaton (NYSE:SLW), short term, mid-term or long term, the company has positioned itself for solid growth for a long time to come, and it looks like it'll successfully deliver on that strategy.

Even after the extraordinary growth of 46 percent in 2009, the company looks like they'll continue on in 2010, although at a slightly subdued growth range of 35 percent.

In 2010 Silver Wheaton projects an increase of 23.5 million silver equivalent ounces, eventually reaching as high as 40 million equivalent ounces by 2013.

The strong cash position of the company has them right where they can take advantage of any opportunity which comes there way, with it all added together being over $600 million in available capital to tap, not including its cash flow.

Silver - Idaho's New Currency?

Silver as an Idaho Currency

In an effort to attempt to bring some potential business and jobs to Idaho, state representatives have introduced a bill which would allow silver to be used a currency in the state, being produced in the form of medallions.

Rep. Phil Hart proposed the bill which was unanimously agreed to be introduced by the Idaho House State Affairs Committee.

The new silver medallions could also be used to pay state taxes.

A similar bill was introduced by Hart in 2009 but didn't go anywhere. Now that the recession continues on, the lawmakers in the state are looking at ways to help get their economy going.

The idea of introducing a bill which would include silver as a currency is fantastic. I wonder what will happen when the silver is far more valuable then the U.S. dollar in the state? That will be interesting; not if, but when it happens. Of course that assumes the mining takes place and the bill voted for approval.

One thing that's unfortunate is the need to offer property- and income-tax incentives to companies agreeing to launch a silver-processing business in the state.

But that's a secondary concern when taking into account the fantastic implication of silver being used as a currency again.
